I have a weak spot for sashimi and japanese food so imagine how thrilled I was when someone told me about a vegetarian japanese eatery. If you have been reading up on vegetarian food in Singapore, this wouldn't be new to you as it is really popular among the vegetarian community in Singapore. Their unagi rice has been reviewed to death and I was at first determined not to do this dish but gave in eventually.

We were full of praise for the dish when we had our first mouthful of the japanese rice and sweet sauce. The unagi is acually tofu patty with a crispy coating. It is not like anything vegetarian patty that I have eaten so the thought put into the creation of this dish is already a plus point. Personally I do not find that it resembles the texture of real unagi but nevertheless still a pretty decent dish. The set comes with side dishes and can be quite filling. A little on the heavy side in fact.

Salmon sashimi was pretty cool. Actually better than expected. The previous vegetarian salmon sashimi I tried somewhere else was too slippery and jelly-like. The texture of the sashimi that Zen offers is better and the first piece tasted like an inferior grade of the real thing. A pretty good job I must say. But as I moved on to the third, fourth and fifth piece, my tastebuds kind of figured out the difference.

Can't wait to go back on my second visit to try the rest of what they have to offer. Oh right, they put up a 'moving out soon' sign at the counter so it would probably wise to call them up for the newest update if you do not want to go on a wasted trip!
